Problem:
America First Legal filed a request with the State of New York Ethics Commission for the Unified Court System to release Judge Juan Merchan’s financial disclosures, which are public documents under New York law. The Ethics Commission failed to respond to AFL’s request, so AFL sent a demand letter threatening legal action if they failed to release Judge Merchan’s financial disclosures. The Ethics Commission continued to withhold Judge Merchan’s financial disclosures.
Action:
America First Legal sued the Ethics Commission for the New York Unified Court System after it refused to produce Judge Merchan’s financial disclosures from 2018–2024 as required under the law.
Result:
AFL obtained the ethics disclosures, and the litigation has concluded.
