Parents’ Rights
Title VI Toolkit
If you believe that you or others protected by Title VI have been discriminated against on the basis of race, color, or national origin, you may file a complaint with the Federal agency that provides funds for the program where you believe the discrimination is occurring. A signed, written complaint should be filed, generally, within 180 days.
Title IX Toolkit
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that parents of children who suffer discrimination “on the basis of sex” may sue immediately to enforce the law. Therefore, parents and guardians may file a Title IX complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, typically, within 180 days.
Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment
Though the Supreme Court has affirmed that parents have the authority over their children’s education, schools often ignore this right. The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) gives parents the legal right to review curricula and opt out of certain activities in federally funded schools, helping them hold schools accountable and protect their children’s privacy.
