We’re not going to bend or break or cower to someone’s threat…We’re going to stand up and unite around our shared values, and ‘residents’ have my assurance that I’m going to protect the families of this city…Our city’s police department is not going to (double) as ICE agents – we’re just not going to do that…It’s a dangerous precedent where members of communities begin to feel unsafe with their local police department.

The law is very clear, local police officers are not federal agents, that is clear…There is a strong black liberation presentation that comes out of the city of Chicago as it relates to being a sanctuary city…What the Trump administration has called for is for local police departments around the country to behave as ICE agents. In sanctuary cities, that is not permissible.

I am going to do everything that I can to protect our undocumented immigrants. They are residents of our state…they are talking about rounding up people who are law-abiding undocumented immigrants in this country, many of whom are working, paying taxes, not getting any benefits from those taxes, I might add.
