Problem:
America First Legal (AFL) began investigating the New York County District Attorney’s Office to obtain internal and external communications from its key leaders regarding former President Donald Trump. Following the partisan conviction of President Trump in New York, AFL launched new investigations into the alleged collusion between D.A. Bragg’s office and aligned leftist dark money organizations. After over a year of stonewalling, the D.A.’s Office granted access to only one single-page record. However, the D.A.’s Office identified “36 responsive records” to AFL’s request for all communications regarding Donald J. Trump with the U.S. Department of Justice. Still, the request was denied on “grand jury secrecy grounds.” Bragg’s office’s statement appears to be inconsistent with the DOJ’s response to Chairman Jim Jordan, stating they found nothing from investigating email communications stretching from January 20, 2021, through the date of the verdict between any officials in DOJ leadership, including all political appointees in those offices, and the D.A.’s office regarding any investigation of President Trump.
Action:
AFL sued Alvin Bragg and his office for refusing to comply with the New York Freedom of Information Law (FOIL).
Result:
This case is currently being litigated.
