In June 2023, Johnathan Talbot, an Outdoor Research employee, encountered Manoah Ainuu, a North Face-sponsored ice climber known for using his platform to decry what he sees as systemic racism. After introducing himself and mentioning his involvement in a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee at a prior job, Ainuu accused Talbot of being racist and having white privilege. The next morning, Ainuu took to Instagram and told his 15,000 followers that Talbot had made racist remarks and attempted to start a fight. Ainuu urged his followers to get Talbot fired. One post was even reshared by a North Face executive managing sponsored athletes. Ainuu’s campaign continued for days and ultimately led to Talbot’s termination from Outdoor Research.
Represented by America First Legal (AFL), Mr. Talbot filed a federal defamation and tortious interference lawsuit against Ainuu and North Face. This case challenges the malicious smear campaign that sought to destroy Talbot’s reputation and career. AFL is committed to holding those who weaponize false accusations accountable
