WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, America First Legal (AFL) released the “AFL Parental Rights Demand Letter Template” for parents across the country to arm themselves and protect their children against the insidious woke agenda of public school bureaucrats and teacher unions. This Demand Letter Template enables parents to have a voice in their childrens’ education by taking independent and immediate action by putting schools on notice that parents are paying attention to what curriculum and other material their children are being taught and to object if they wish.
Once sent to a school principal or administrator, the AFL Parental Consent Letter—a tool parents can use on their own without the aid of legal counsel—triggers legal protections for parents and puts administrators and teachers on notice that violating parents’ federal and state law rights through woke indoctrination of children will have direct consequences for those involved. It expressly opts out children from “social emotional learning,” Critical Race Theory (CRT) infused lessons, and surveys or information collections on such things as “preferred pronouns,” political attitudes, and religious beliefs without prior written parental consent. It also makes clear that a school may not hide from a parent, for example, his or her child’s “gender identity transition,” referral to a third party mental health counselor or abortion provider, or illegal drug use.
The AFL Parental Rights Demand Letter Template supplements and expands upon the AFL “Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment: A Toolkit for Parents” (available in a printable PDF version). AFL created this Toolkit to make American parents and guardians aware of their rights under the federal Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) as all parents, no matter where they live, have a Constitutional right to control the care, custody, and upbringing of their children. The PPRA guarantees parents access to all of the instructional materials used in public school classrooms, and requires administrators and teachers to obtain parents’ written consent before conducting any survey, analysis, or evaluation revealing information concerning political affiliations or beliefs of the student or the student’s parent, sex behavior or attitudes, religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs, or any form of illegal, anti-social, self-incriminating, or demeaning behavior. Some States guarantee parents similar rights.
