City of Huntington Beach v. Newsom, et al.

Case No. 2:24-cv-7959
Central District of California
Status: Ongoing
Filed: September 2024

What's at Stake

California’s Assembly Bill 1955, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, prohibits school districts from notifying parents if their child expresses gender confusion or begins to socially transition at school. The law blocks parents from know critical information about their own children, and egregiously violates parental rights.

America First Legal (AFL) in partnership with Schaerr Jaffee LLP, filed suit on behalf of the City of Huntington Beach and a group of California parents. The lawsuit argues that AB 1955 violates the 14th Amendment right of parents to make decisions about their child’s upbringing, undermines local school district authority, and imposes an extreme state agenda on families without consent.
