Biden-Harris Administration Rejects Lessons of 9/11, AFL Launches Investigation at DOJ

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On September 11, 2001, terrorists affiliated with Al Qaeda and supported by Qatar killed nearly three thousand Americans. Today, AFL has opened an investigation of the U.S. Department of Justice National Security Division to expose the Biden-Harris Administration’s reckless disregard for the lessons learned from that atrocity.

9/11 was a day of unprecedented shock and suffering in the history of the United States. The nation was unprepared. To understand how 9/11 happened, and how the nation can avoid such tragedy again, Congress and the President created the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (Public Law 107-306, November 27, 2002). In 2004, the 9/11 Commission issued its report. Its key findings and conclusions included:

  • “[T]he enemy is not just “terrorism,” some generic evil. This vagueness blurs the strategy.” Rather, the “catastrophic threat” is “Islamist terrorism.”
  • “Vigorous efforts to track terrorist financing” were needed because “information about terrorist money helps us to understand their networks, search them out, and disrupt their operations.”
  • The “immigration system is not able to deliver on its basic commitments, much less support counterterrorism.” Among other things, “[i]It is elemental to border security to know who is coming into the country,” to “monitor and respond to entrances between our ports of entry” and to vet who is coming into our country.

The 9/11 Commission Reports’ common-sense, empirically grounded analysis and recommendations remain valid, two decades after the fact. Yet, for partisan political gain, the Biden-Harris Administration has turned its back on the lessons so painfully learned. It has consigned the fundamental fact that 9/11 was an Islamist attack on the United States to the memory hole; the 2023 statements of Biden-Harris Secretary of State Blinken and Attorney General Garland on 9/11 echo Biden-Harris ally Ilhan Omar, who said that on 9/11, “some people did something.” It has provided Iran, the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism, and its proxies, with tens of billions of dollars. And, in violation of the Taylor Force Act, it has poured more than two billion dollars into Judea and Samaria (aka the West Bank) and Gaza, illegally benefitting Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Finally, instead of securing the border, it has flung open the doors, allowing uncounted millions of illegal aliens to enter the United States unchecked. These include suspected terrorists whose numbers and whereabouts are unknown.

Accordingly, AFL is requesting key categories of records from the National Security Division of DOJ that should shed light on:

  • The role and relationship of Qatar and the Muslim Brotherhood with both key players in the pro-Hamas network now operating in the United States and to migrants crossing our open borders;
  • The danger posed by the Islamists among the millions of illegal aliens that it has admitted to our country since January 2021; and
  • The impact of the Biden-Harris Administration’s political considerations on the National Security Division’s assessment and response to the threat of Islamist terrorism.

AFL will continue fighting to expose the Biden-Harris Administration’s reckless policies and to hold it accountable for protecting our national security.

Statement from Reed D. Rubinstein, America First Legal Senior Vice President:

“On 9/11, the United States was attacked by a brutal and fanatical enemy motivated by the same twisted core ideology as ISIS and Hamas. Twenty years ago, the 9/11 Commission warned that ‘Islamist terrorists mean exactly what they say: to them America is the font of all evil, the “head of the snake,” and it must be converted or destroyed. [This] is not a position with which Americans can bargain or negotiate. With it there is no common ground—not even respect for life—on which to begin a dialogue. It can only be destroyed or utterly isolated.’ This warning speaks truth; truth that the Biden-Harris Administration, to buy a few pro-terrorist votes in Michigan, ignores,” said Reed D. Rubinstein.
